Its a rich and vibrant story about love and sin and redemption, laced through with allusions to everything from Peters denial of Christ to the none pizza with left beef meme. But I really wanted a magic system that was scholarship-based, that was something that you had to earn. But you know, youll have people read and be like, It was incredibly surprising when I caught up to that moment and it turned out to be Gideon all along.. You're pretty much all-powerful. It doesnt have anything in it of the mythology, which I hope is baroque, which comes later. And in fact, in the mythology, its not meant to be romantic at all, but it inevitably has that shaded into it. But the tropes Muir rolls out for Gideon and Harrow are deeply romantic nevertheless. Harrow's family died by suicide upon discovering her heretical trespass; Harrow has been burdened with secretly leading the Ninth House for years. It appears to be the only surviving structure left on the planet everyone calls The First House (most likely a post-apocalyptic Earth, but we dont know that for sure yet), and it is in ruins. One of the things that makes Tamsyn Muirs fantasy novel Gideon the Ninth so deeply satisfying to read is the giddy joy it takes in playing with different genre tropes. The resultant tension is part of what animates this trilogy, and its mysterious backstory, and even the romance between Gideon and Harrow. That is something that is going to be, not explained, but visited again, in the third book. The case centred on Clarence Earl Gideon, who had been charged with a felony for allegedly burglarizing a pool hall in Panama City, Florida, in June 1961. Gideon the Ninth is too funny to be horror, too gooey to be science fiction, has too many spaceships and autodoors to be fantasy, and has far more bloody dismemberings than your average parlor romance. Oops. One thing that really helped me was reframing that achieving. And Ianthe will be awful. Its there that our central cast of necromancers and cavaliers set to work trying to solve the puzzle that the Emperor-God has set before them: namely, how to turn the necromancers into the mysterious beings known as Lyctors. And similarly, the other Lyctors are all trapped in this weird trauma spiral with John, one that leaves them endlessly hoping they can break free from his hold over them, while knowing that it would take a desperate, last-second, last-ditch effort to accomplish that liberation. But Muir uses the claustrophobia and narrowed focus to fine purpose, concentrating the action around a series of increasingly torturous tests (which serve both to hook the plot along and give some baseline explanations for the entwined science, religion and necromantic magic on which her universe depends) and the relationships that develop between the limited cast of characters particularly Gideon and Harrow. But you know, whatever Harrow thinks of sex is really weird anyway. First of all, theres the problem of tone. Its such a bad joke, and its so satisfying to understand especially coming the way that it does, nested among trauma spirals and threesomes with God and grief and dissociation and so, so many skeletons. But Ive got one single page of notes in the back of an old school book where Id written down the idea of it about three weeks before I started writing. That all came about precisely because of the storyline I wanted to tell. I want to talk a little about Harrow and Ianthes relationship. She needed to be somebody who really had to work for it. It was as if the person I seemed to be wasnt real, because, well, she wasnt. Go nuts.. We have quite a few people who want to know about Harrow calling Gideon Griddle and where that nickname came from. Cytherea explains that she killed the real Dulcinea and her cavalier shortly before arriving at Canaan House and assumed her identity; likewise, she was the one who killed the Fourth and Fifth Houses, in the hopes that doing so would lure the Emperor back to Canaan House. This debut novel, the first of a projected trilogy, blends science fiction, fantasy, gothic chiller, and classic house-party mystery. For some readers of the novel, that death is just the latest iteration of the infuriating Bury Your Gays trope, in which lesbians are introduced in popular culture only to be immediately killed off, never left with a happy ending of their own. They are opposing archetypes (sweet jock versus vicious goth bitch, or, if you will, Sweaterboy versus Absolute Nightmare), so of course they must despise each other. No one ever has to spend a week in a haunted house only to find it filled with, like, puppies and cake. We know by the end of Gideon that Harrow and Gideon have become the most important people in the world to one another, but they never make any explicitly romantic declarations of love. Never! The characters are forever strolling through its shadowy corridors to discover horrors lurking, or marveling at the ancient luxuries slowly rotting before them. I wish that I was writing into the void, where I could just be interrogated for what it is, not for what people bring into it. The set-up is genius: In some (possibly distant, possibly ancient, probably super-far-future) corner of the universe exist nine ancient houses with nine rulers and heirs adept in different forms of gooey, death-obsessed magic. Just who is telling this story? Shes getting down and dirty in the most appallingly necromantic way. Which is why its so interesting that Harrow keeps using her AUs to try to prevent herself from remembering Gideons death. Im not one of these authors whos like, I just let the characters take me to where they want to go. They go where I damn well put them! But I think that if you have a couple or if you have a pair of girls, the problem is that its a hell of a lot more difficult to have people see that as romantic. Great, thats all I want in the world. And heres another thing I noticed: I think Muir got much more confident as a writer between book one and book two. (An infant Gideon somehow survived the sacrifice, leading Harrow's parents and the rest of the Ninth House to treat her coldly out of fear.) To my eye, this book suffers a bit from second-volume-itis: It has a lot of cleanup from volume one to take care of, and a lot of pieces to put into place for volume three, and it more or less pulls off both, but you can see the strain. The truth is that I am just a very referential writer. What is maybe less effective for me in Harrow the Ninth is the mythology. Its almost like Ive got to pay the toll. Gideon the Ninth ends with Gideons death, just as she and Harrow have finally found an equal footing and seem poised to turn a corner in their relationship. So how do you think making that trope feminine changes things? Something went wrong. And whenever I recognize one Im like, Oh! and then I just keep reading. One of the tropes of anime is for two characters who are destined to fall in love to take a bath together and talk about their pasts, often while revealing their deepest and darkest secrets. It makes her become just vulnerable enough to be lovable. Trauma only makes sense when youre in it; for everybody else, its an academic exercise. Well, it means I have a lot of fun. Theres a compelling argument to be made that the relationship between Harrow and Gideon is too toxic to root for or romanticize, and thats one of the major critiques Ive seen of the whole Locked Tomb trilogy. But at the same time, Ive got a lot of mates who have also written books with central lesbian protagonists, women-loving-women protagonists, and oh my god, you can basically have them make out on screen and everyones like, Hm, very sibling-y! Sometimes I imagine Muir as a cackling mad scientist in a lab, grabbing beakers labeled enemies to lovers and in space and that incel meme about studying the blade and swirling all their contents together. Theres biblical allusion that I havent even begun to mine. Especially on the battlefield, that kind of thing is just absolutely bread and butter. But the thing is, the AUs she keeps creating arent designed to overwrite the knowledge of a death. I never stopped delighting in them, but I would guess a bunch of people found them tiresome. Hes like an immortal Michael Scott, and Muirs blatant recycling of pop culture tropes and references plays a little bit differently when you realize that within the world of these books, they might well be literal holy texts. Despite their clashing personalities and mutual hatred of each other, Gideon is Harrow's only real choice of cavalier, primarily due to an atmospheric contamination incident around the time of their births that killed the rest of the Ninth House's children. Harrow and Gideon travel to Canaan House, a decaying mansion on the planet of the First House, where they meet the heirs and cavaliers of the other Houses. Constance: Muir is definitely taking more risks in book two. Theres a special joy in watching two people who hate each other come to first grudgingly appreciate one another and then fall in love. Placing us in this gothic setting is a good indication that the mysteries of Lyctorhood will be darker than any of our main characters expect they will be and more, its a hint as to the exact nature of their darkness. To be honest, Gideon is a name which I think has some biblical heft to it: Gideon and Mideon. That book got much richer in its second half, and Harrow is richer still. The survivors battle throughout the House, but Cytherea is apparently invincible. Obviously Harrow is devoted to her bones but I think spirit magic has a certain something going for it. The Emperor needs necromancers. The fate of the universe might depend on it. And it is hungry. and Harry Potter in equal measure; to a thousand Agatha Christie locked-house mysteries and Sweet Valley High. If you feel really sad that Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame, you can write fanfiction where shes a coffeeshop barista in no particular danger at all, and youll get catharsis from that but it will also remind you of exactly how she died, and how painful that storyline was to experience.
